Reflection of Shelly Turkle

In Shelly Turkle's TED TALK, Turkle describes the recent situation of people prefer to connect with other

people on social media, but they have problems of connecting other people in the real life. Turkle

summarizes this situation as the relationship between conversation and connection. She doesn't blame

people who willing to connect people on the social media. Instead, she defines this situation

psychologically. Turkle takes an example of bringing robots to the nursing house and elders have a good

time with them. This result shows that technology takes the role of companionship, and Turkle points out

the demand of friendship gives people pressure. Next, Turkle concludes technology can solve people's

 problem from their real life.

I'm agree with Turkle's opinion of people's connection without social media, and I like her describing her

opinion psychologically. However, I have additional opinions according to Turkle's opinions. I wonder

connecting through social media has no disadvantage for some of people like introverts. Introverts prefer

to make connection with people through social media, which is better than no communication without

social media.

  1. I agree with your point of view, it feels like the world is made for extroverts when in fact it is easier for us introverts to communicate behind a screen. Although I don't know if it is equally empowering as face-to-face, and I'm not sure if it just decreases our ability to socialize.
