"If we can't find out what is true, we can't find any problem." (1:15:50)
Jeff Orlowski directed The Social Dilemma to discuss the negative impacts of social media.
Orlowski invited guest speakers who used to work in a social media company. These guests
provide various opinions of social media, but all opinions relate to how social media
affects people. This documentary film also introduces a story of a family whose children
addict to social media very much. According to this story, Orlowski described how people use
social media to compete for attention. Engagement goal, growth goal, and reverse goal work
together to control a person's attention in social media. I really like this storyboarding
technique in this film because it helps me understand the dilemma of social media.
In addition, several research notes were added in this film. I'm impressed about the fact that
fake news spread quicker than non-fake news. This situation represents the power of social
media. Social media is good at matching the best content for each person. When one type of
information spread quicker, an increasing number of people would believe that information.
This situation sounds like people's fear of being ignored.
